RCR Wireless News reported yesterday that Sprint PCS is readying an implementation of Short Messaging Service (SMS) for deployment on its nationwide network. Currently, they employ a WAP-based application for text messaging.
I’m not currently a Sprint customer, so when I read this it shocked me. I guess this shows how insignificant text messaging had been to mobile carriers until relatively recently. As a T-Mobile customer, I know that SMS has higher availability than GPRS (the protocol that WAP uses in the GSM world). Maybe wireless data capability is more available on Sprint’s network, because its network is generally newer.
But, how could a WAP application be configured to mimic SMS on most cellphones? The application can’t work in a “push mode”, can it? You must have to go to the app and check if you have any messages. You Sprint customers who are readers, correct me if I’m wrong.
If my conclusion is correct, a lot of Sprint customers are probably dying for SMS. [ via MobileTracker.net ]
