The Tour de Suisse is going on now in Switzerland. It’s a great stage race that’s shorter than the Tour de France. A lot of pro cyclists take part in the Tour de Suisse or the Critérium du Dauphiné as a tune up for the Tour.
InCycle had a few on-board cameras with riders during the sprint finish of Stage 5 from Ossingen to Büre A.D. Aare that took place on Wednesday. The YouTube video is pretty amazing in terms of showing the fight for positioning leading into a narrow finishing straight.
This is not the kind of video that Americans typically see on NBC Sports Network during major stage races like the Tour, although with the advent of GoPro cameras, it’s technically possible for point of view video to be captured.
I don’t expect to see pro riders in the Tour de France with GoPros because the A.S.O. probably wouldn’t permit it. Even if they did permit it, the riders who are competing for a stage victory or one of the overall championships probably would not want to add any unnecessary weight or bulk.
But if someone’s using a GoPro or similar camera in a stage of the Tour de Suisse, the UCI must not ban them entirely from competition. I’ll have to look into what the rules are governing use of this wearable technology.
