While we’re on the subject of kitchen gadgets, a good one to have this at time of year is an electronic thermometer to help you determine when the turkey is done. One of the better deals around right now is the Taylor Digital Oven Thermometer/Timer which will let you keep the probe in the turkey while the display and timing unit sits outside the oven. (Amazon is calling it a “hot buy” at the moment.)
The biggest complaint about this thermometer is that it’s only rated for up to 392 degrees Fahrenheit, which means its only useful for applications like baking or turkey roasting. On the other hand, getting the turkey cooked perfectly is one of the only uses most people will have for this type of thing.
Last year, I used a thermometer that consisted of a probe with a small digital display at one end. I couldn’t leave it in the oven because the display part is made of plastic. Every time I opened the oven door, I reduced the internal temperature of the oven and wasted gas. The Taylor Digital Oven Thermometer/Timer is a better solution.
